Today we will be exploring partly by cycles the Pench / Kanha forest corridor which is part of the Satpura–Maikal landscape. This landscape is classified as a global-priority Tiger Conservation Landscape (TCL) due to its potential for providing sufficient habitat that will allow the long-term survival of tigers.  Wildlife scientists have found that the tigers in the Satpura–Maikal landscape have high genetic variation and very low genetic subdivision so the chances of their long term survival is brighter in this region if the forest corridors is intact and providing route for tigers to disperse.  The other tiger habitats in India are fast becoming islands and there is little change in genetic pool of the tiger population.

We will also get to learn about work been done by conservation organizations to save this critical landscape. Our visit will spread awareness among local communities regarding wildlife conservation and shrinking corridors.

Late evening we will arrive at Kanha and check into your lodge.

Note

Typical Cycling Day

This itinerary allows for six days of cycling accompanied by a escort/naturalist with average daily distances of approximately 20 to 50 kms each day. But there is plenty of scope to cycle more or less distance, depending on your fitness level.

Due to distances between and around National Parks, we will actually travel few hours on Cycle on the smaller country roads and with the remaining journey by 4 WD vehicle. The vehicle will also carry bottled water, soft drinks and fresh fruits and will always travel behind the last cyclist keeping a safe distance so not to frighten any wildlife that may cross the road. If you wish to take a break from riding, simply wait at the side of the road and you will be picked up or inform your accompanying cycling escort. Above all else, the emphasis will be on seeing India and learning about wildlife.

Cycle Support and Grading

At all times you will have the security of full time accompanying escort who will also be a naturalist and a back-up vehicle - either a SUV or a Van. The vehicle will carry your entire luggage, your cycle and yourself if you want at any time during the ride. The backup vehicle will be with you throughout the day following behind at a distance and the driver will have mobile phone / wireless hand set. When we are on forest trails where 4WD vehicle cannot follow we will have an accompanying escort/naturalist on motor bike. Your escort will carry a good tool kit and will help to fix bike problems so all you normally need to carry is a daypack, for your camera etc, however, we cannot guarantee that we will be equipped for all repairs.

Although this trip is moderately demanding there is plenty of time to explore and go on game drives. Apart from the cycling you will need to get up very early each morning for the game drives. However you will have some time off in the afternoons.

Pench Tree Lodge

The famous Jungle Book character Mowgli was a wolf befriending boy from the tribal village of Pench. If Mowgli could enliven his escapades, Pench tree lodge would be his time warped home in 21st century. He could certainly somersault with the monkeys here or luxuriously laze under the shade of Mahua Tree, in the comforts of stylish, spacious and snugly tree houses set in regal landscapes. Later, deciding to set out on a Jeep Safari to meet ‘Shere Khan’–the Tiger and ‘Baloo’-the Bear and check on his troop of ‘Bander log’– monkey folks and all other good old friends from Pench national park.
Pench Tree Lodge is the refuge of the au courant, adventurous and eco sensitive ‘Mowgli’. Our six well appointed tree houses are perched in the undisturbed 16 hectares of forested area in the small ‘Sarrahiri’ village of Pench in the Karmajhiri area. This is the first lodge to be set up in this underdeveloped zone and supports are conservation policy of not overcrowding areas and making them unsustainable with over exposure to tourism.

Kanha Earth Lodge

Kanha Earth Lodge lies in 16 acres of natural forest, tucked away in a small hamlet bordering Kanha’s buffer zone. Its unique location, 30 minutes from the Khatia/Kisli park gate, ensures that it is close enough for easy access to the park, but still far enough from the glut of hotels lining Kanha’s tourist hub to offer guests a true wilderness experience. Our guests benefit from our incredible location, outstanding hospitality, experienced team of naturalists, and commitment towards conservation and local communities. The 12 luxury bungalows with en suite bathrooms and open verandahs have been inspired by Gond tribal architecture and offer environmentally sensitive, low-impact accommodation through their design and use of local stone and waste wood, while the absence of neighbouring lodges or highways creates an ideal setting for nature walks, birding and cycling trips through the surrounding forest.
