Overview

A glorious , pre determined road journey taking you to the mystique and mystery of the remote Spiti region, once a part of the kingdom of Nariss Korssum (Western Tibet) on the Indian side of Tibetan plateau, on an odyssey of discovery and delight on the old Hindustan Tibet Road once a part of the legendary ancient Silk Route. From Delhi, make your way to Post Independence India’s first planned city – Chandigarh, and next day begin your journey in the Himalayas by driving to British Raj’s summer capital Shimla. The mystical stunning valley of Spiti in the remote cold desert lands of its Trans Himalayan environs of Himachal Pradesh, standing cheek by jowl with the Tibetan Plateau. Isolated from the rest of the country for half the year by the snowbound passes of the mountains encircling it, its rarefied environs offer the intrepid visitor a stunning bouquet of gorgeous landscapes, warm hospitality and cultural highs that leave you with a dazzling array of holiday memories. The legendary Silk Route of ancient times and the place for high adventure, profitable commerce and cultural exchange. From Kaza, a long drive brings you to Manali valley , with its myriad charms and sights. You return to Delhi via Chandigarh as your holiday draws to an Incredible end. The self drive holiday starts and terminates in the National Capital New Delhi, where from you pick and return the car back to us.

Day 1 - Arrive Delhi

 On arrival at the Indira Gandhi International airport, proceed for Immigration clearance after disembarking. Thereafter collect baggage from the baggage carousel and walk to the arrivals lounge after clearing customs.

You will be greeted by our company representative, with a placard bearing your name on it. He will assist you with your luggage and transfer you to the hotel.

In the afternoon, you can get acquainted with your hired car, GPS  and do the paperwork

(Check in time at the hotel is 1400 hours)

Day 2 - Delhi / Chandigarh

 After early breakfast, drive to Chandigarh (240 Kms, 4-5 hours ) to avoid the morning peak traffic

Afternoon guided sightseeing  visiting the Capitol Complex, Government Museum and Rock Garden

On arrival stay overnight at Taj hotel – Superior room


Day 3 - Chandigarh / Shimla

 After  breakfast, drive upto Shimla ( 135 Kms, 3-4 hours) , the start of the Himalayan expedition. 

On arrival at Shimla, visit the Commissioner’s Office to obtain Inner Line permit.

(Note: This should be a government working day- Monday to Friday)

Requirement for the Permit - 3 passport size photos, Original passport and visa with 2 photocopies of each.

Day 4 - Shimla

 After breakfast, morning guided sightseeing of Shimla visiting Institute of Advance Studies, Sankat Mochan (Temple), The mall road and Himachal State Museum

Day 5 - Shimla / Sangla

After breakfast, Morning drive to the visually stunning Sangla valley with packed picnic lunch

It is a long day hence we suggest you leave early.

Day 6 - Sangla

Day at lesure to aclimatise to the thin air

Day 7 - Sangla

 Today drive to Chitkul - the last village on the ancient Hindustan (India)-Tibet road.

Trek up to the army camp.

Day 8 - Sangla / Kaza

 Drive about 8-9 hours to reach Kaza with packed lunch

Day 9 - Kaza

 Today you could visit the ancient Ki Monastery, built in 11th century  (4116 m) the oldest and biggest in Spiti possessing priceless Thankas (fabric painting) and array of ancient musical wind instruments.

Later drive to village of Kibber (4205 m) & Gete (4270 m) which are among the highest motor able inhabited villages in the world.

Day 10 - Kaza

 Today we suggest you visit 1000 year old monastery of Tabo (3050 m) with its fabulous murals & Dhankar monastery which was built in the 12th century (3870 m) and  is placed high in the valley.

Day 11 - Kaza / Manali

 After breakfast, drive to Manali ( 200 Kms, 8-9 hours )with packed lunch,  via Kunzum-la Pass.

Kunzum-la gets fully cleared by Mid June every year and therefore only possible to cross over after that. This drive is the climax of the adventure and passes through riverbeds, glaciers and a route with stunning Himalayan backdrop. .

Day 12 - Manali

 Day at leisure for rest and rejuvenation.

Optional -  Visit the Hindu Hadimba temple built in 16th century and some newly built Tibetan monasteries, as well as the sulphur hot springs at Vashisht village.

You could also visit Naggar – the former capital of the Rajas of Kulu, the town is home to two old temples and a small museum in the home of Russian painter  the late Nicholas Roerich.

Day 13 - Manali / Chandigarh

After early breakfast, drive to Chandigarh ( 300 Kms, 8-9 hours) with packed lunch.

Day 14 - Chandigarh / Delhi / Departure

 Morning at leisure with breakfast

Check out time at the hotel is 12 noon.

This afternoon drive back to Delhi to return your vehicle and complete all formalities pertaining to it, followed by transfer to the International airport to board your onwards flight.

(Reporting time for international flights is at least 03 hours prior to departure)

Sangla Camp
